The Industry
Banana is the leading fruit grown in the Philippines and a consistent top dollar earner. The prospect of Philippine bananas in the domestic and foreign market is still promising. We have cavendish and banana chips for export. for local market are lakatan and latundan.
Description
  • Cavendish is grown in plantation scale in Mindanao
  • Lakatan and Latundan are grown commercially also intended for the Luzon and Visayas markets
  • Cardaba is grown mainly for the banana chips industry
  • Balangon or bongolan is grown organically in Tupi, South Cotabato
  • Organic Cavendish is being grown by the multinational corporations
  • Banana grows best at tropical places with temperatures ranging from 22ºC - 31ºC
  • Elevation - can be grown from sea level up to 100 meters above sea level (Lakatan, Cardaba, Señorita and Morado)
  • Soil - Deep, friable, well drained with 40% clay, 75% silt and 85% loam, soil pH is 6.5
  • Water requirement - average annual rainfall is 2000-2500 mm or 25mm per week. Water is necessary on all growth stages. Drain excess water by construction of drainage canal
  • Distance of planting - plants are spaced at 2.0 x 2.5 meters with 2000 plants per hectare. Standard distance to minimize Sigatoka infection. For high density planting - the plants are spaced at 2x3 meters with 2 plants per hill making 3,200 plants per hectare for Cardaba - 3x4 or 4x4 meters apart
Varieties
  • Varieties of banana include: Cavendish, Latundan, Lakatan, Inarnibal, Amas, Bungulan, Pitogo, Morado, Inbaniko, Señorita
  • Almost 200 variety and strain of bananas and plantains maintained at the BPI-Genebank. Promising varieties includes: Saba-Cardaba, Paa Dalaga, Radja, Pelipia, Katsila, Abujon, Turangkog and Dalian (resistant to BBTV)
  • Banana hybrids such as FHIA 1,2 and 3 are highly resistant to SIGATOKA
Production
World
  • Total world banana production for 2006 reached about 6,713,957,000 MT
  • The average world production was estimated at about 62.7 Million MT per year (FAO). The world average yield is around 15.6 MT/ha
  • Leading banana producers include: India, Brazil, China and Ecuador, Philippines, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Mexico
 
Philippines
National
  • Philippines is the 4th top producer of banana in 2006 and it contributes 9.38% on the world's total area planted with banana
  • Production volume grew by 7.3% during the 1st semester of 2007, 7.8% in 2006 over 2005
  • in 2006, Philippines has an existing production areaof 428,804 hectares that has produced a volume of 6,794,564 MT
  • Cavendish accounts for 41.37% of all banana produced followed by Cardava at 33.64% and Lakatan 12.3%
 
Luzon
  • In 2006, Luzon as an existing production area of 117,015 hectares broken down as follows: CAR (4,121 ha); R1 (7,874 ha); R2 (23,325 ha); R3 (6,279 ha); R4A (30,375 ha); R4B (26,311 ha) and R5 (18,730 ha) (source BAS)
  • It has produced a volume of 823,656 MT broken down as follows: CAR (25,054 MT); R1 (41,950 MT); R2 (350,997 MT); R3 (50,821 MT); R4A (105,520 MT); R4B (185,542 MT); R5 (63,772 MT) (source: BAS)
 
Visayas
  • In terms of area, Visayas contributed around 86,200 hectares broken down as follows: R6 (34, 735 ha); R7 (21,066 ha) and R8 (30,399 ha) (source: BAS)
  • In 2006, the total production of visayas was 709,209 MT which is about 10% of the national prodcution. R6 (315,970 MT); R7 (163,291 MT) and R8 (229,948 MT) (source:BAS)
 
Mindanao
  • In 2006, Mindanao has an existing production area of 225,589 hectares broken down as follows: R9 (19,618 ha); R10 (49,228 ha); R11 (73,297 ha); R12 (26,779 ha); R13 (25,793 ha) and ARMM (30,874 ha) (source:BAS)
