Industry |
Mango,
the country's national fruit is considered as one of the finest
in the world. It is the third most important fruit crop of the
country based on export volume and value next to banana and pineapple.
it has an established domestic market and has bright opportunities
for the international market both in fresh or processed form
The country's export variety,
The "Carabao Mango" is one of the best varieties in
the world.
- About 73% of the total area
planted to mangoes is owned by small farmers while 24% operate
farm sizes between 3 to 99.9 hectares. Those operating 10 hectares
and above constitute only about 3%. About 93% of total production
is consumed locally. Majority of the mango processors are small
and medium enterprises. Mango industry supports about 2.5 M farmers.

- Carabao
- originated from India, Burma
and Malaya (Indo-Burma region)
- tree has coarse, large and
conical trunk with shallow and small cracks on bark, canopy dome
shaped
- fruit is elongated and kidney-shaped,
weighs about 240 grams with thin, yellow pulp, very tender taste
and slight aroma

- Pico
- originated from India, Burma
and Malaya
- trees has upright growth,
open crown; has deeper cracks on barks
- kidney-shaped fruit weighing
about 230 grams; distinct beak on the apex, flesh in fibrous
and thick, light orange yellow and sweeter than carabao variety

- Katchamita
- originated from India
- has compact crown and lower
tree stand than 'Carabao' and 'Pico'
- fruit is small to medium,
rounded/ oval, green skin with yellowish flesh and preferably
eaten as green

- Other Varieties
- other less important mango
cultivars inlude 'Pahutan', 'Dubul', 'Binoboy' and Señorita
- aside from the University
of the Philippines in Los Baños, Laguna which keeps 50
varieties of mango from all over the world, the National Mango
Research and Development Center (BPI-NMRDC) in Guimaras, has
a collection of different varieties of mango, as well as strains
of 'Carabao' mango in the genebank

| Production
Profile |
- In 2007, Philippines has
an existing production area of 184,131 hectares that has produced
a volume of 1,023,907 MT. (Source: Bureau of Agricultural Statistics)
- 2007 volume of production
grew by 11.25% over 2006 volume.
- Ilocos Region has the highest
production volume in 2007 which totaled to 445,049 MT or about
43% of the total national production volume. Other top producing
regions include: Cagayan Valley (90,109 MT); Central Luzon (84,131
MT): Central Visayas (72,917 MT) and Zamboanga Peninsula (59,603
MT)
- The national target production
for 2008 is 1,093,990 MT.
- In terms of area planted
for 2007, Central Luzon has an existing area of 33,427 hectares
which accounts to 18% of the total area planted.
- For 2008 the target expansion
area for mango is 9,996 hectares wherein SOCCSKSARGEN (Region
XII) targeted the highest which is 2,000 hectares.
