 MANGO COMMODITY PROFILE
 
The Industry
Mango, the country's national fruit is considered as one of the finest in the world. It is the third most important fruit crop of the country based on export volume and value next to banana and pineapple. it has an established domestic market and has bright opportunities for the international market both in fresh or processed form The country's export variety, The "Carabao Mango" is one of the best varieties in the world
Description
  • About 73% of the total area planted to mangoes is owned by small farmers while 24% operate farm sizes between 3 to 9.99 hectares
  • Those operating 10 hectares and above constitute only about 3%
  • About 93% of the total production is consumed locally
  • Majority of the mango processors are small and medium enterprises
  • Contributes an average of P12.5 billion per year in GVA
  • Mango industry supports about 2.5M farmers
Mango grows best at tropical places with temperatures ranging from 21-27ºC and a well distributed annual rainfall
  • Elevation - within 600 meters above sea level
  • Temperature - 21ºC - 27ºC
  • weather - Distinct wet and dry (3-5 months dry). Plenty of sunlight
  • Soil - Loamy, relatively high in organic matter with a good water holding capacity, soil pH of 6.0-7.0
  • Drainage - well drained soil; less moisture level needed during maturation of leaves and buds, flowering, fruit set and ripening
  • Distance of planting - ideal is 12x12
Varieties
    Carabao
    • originated from India, Burma and Malaya (Indo-Burma region)
    • tree has coarse, large and conical trunk with shallow and small cracks on bark, canopy dome shaped
    • fruit is elongated and kidney-shaped, weighs about 240 grams with thin, yellow pulp, very tender taste and slight aroma
     
    Pico
    • originated from India, Burma and Malaya
    • trees has upright growth, open crown; has deeper cracks on barks
    • kidney-shaped fruit weighing about 230 grams; distinct beak on the apex, flesh in fibrous and thick, light orange yellow and sweeter than carabao variety
     
    Katchamita
    • originated from India
    • has compact crown and lower tree stand than 'Carabao' and 'Pico'
    • fruit is small to medium, rounded/ oval, green skin with yellowish flesh and preferably eaten as green
     
    Other Varieties
    • other less important mango cultivars inlude 'Pahutan', 'Dubul', 'Binoboy' and Señorita
    • aside from the University of the Philippines in Los Baños, Laguna which keeps 50 varieties of mango from all over the world, the National Mango Research and Development Center (BPI-NMRDC) in Guimaras, has a collection of different varieties of mango, as well as strains of 'Carabao' mango in the genebank
Production
World
  • World mango production for 2005 totaled to while the area planted was 3,870,200 hectares (FAO)
  • Average yield decreased from 7.82mt/ha to 7.11mt/ha (FAO)
  • In terms of average yield per hectare, the top were China, Pakistan, Brazil, Mexico and India
 
Philippines
National
  • Philippines is the 7th top producer of mangoes in 2006 and it contributes 4.13% on the world's total area planted with mango
  • The production increased by 2.24% annually while the area being planted has an annual average rate of 3.70%
  • In 2006, Philippines has an existing production area of 171,711 hectares that has produced a volume of 919,030 MT
Luzon
  • In 2006, Luzon has an existing production area of 86,443 hectares broken down as follows: CAR (761 ha); R1 (21,683 ha); R2 (9,939 ha); R3 (32,936 ha); R4A (15,548 ha); R4B (3,876 ha) and R5 (1,700 ha) (source: BAS)
  • It has produced a volume of 614,347 MT which is about 67% of the national production broken down as follows: CAR (3,549 MT); R1 (422,533 MT); R2 (51,082 MT); R3 (85,930 MT); R4A (41,576 MT); R4B (8,081 MT); R5 (1,686 MT) (source: BAS)
 
Visayas
  • In terms of area, Visayas contributed around 24,366 hectares broken down as follows: R6 (11,206 ha); R7 (12,448 ha) and R8 (712 ha) (source: BAS)
  • In 2006, the total production of Visayas was 109,920 which is about 14% of the total national production. R6 (55,164 MT); R7 (54,209 MT) and R8 (547 MT) (source: BAS)
 
Mindanao
  • In 2006, Mindanao has an existing production area of 60,903ha broken down as follows: R9 (16,091 ha); R10 (8,657 ha); R11 (9,038 ha); R12 (12,348 ha); R13 (3,325 ha); ARMM (11,444 ha)
  • It has produced a volume of 194,762 MT broken down as follows: R9 (53,932 MT); R10 (33,581 MT); R11 (33,518 MT); R12 (43,362 MT); R13 (15,955 MT) and ARMM (14,414 MT) (source:BAS)
