The Industry
The Philippines is the top exporter of juice concentrates and pineapple juice. Both fresh and processed export industry is increasing. We have Smooth Cayenne or Hawaiian, Quuen or African Queen or Formosa, native Philippine Red or Red Spanish and Cabezona
Varieties
 Smooth Cayenne or Hawaiian
  • 2.3-3.6 kg and considered as the heaviest variety
  • cylindrical in shape, flesh is light in yellow color
  • sweet flavor
  • slightly fibrous texture
  • best for canning
 Quuen or African Queen or Formosa
  • 0.45-0.95 kg, small type and has tapering shape
  • flesh is deep yellow in color
  • Sweetest variety
 Native Philippine Red or Red Spanish
  • 0.91-1.4 kg, medium in size and barrel shaped
  • flesh is in pale yellow color
  • sweet and coarse spicy in flavor
  • fibrous texture
 Cabezona
  • size ranges from 8-12 inches long when fully matured
  • cylindrical shape, dark green to bright yellow
Climatic Requirement
  • Grows over a wide range of soils and climatic conditions but grows best at 150-240m above sea level with a temperature of 24-30ºC
  • Temperature should be relatively uniform throughout the year
  • Rainfall should be relatively uniform throughout the year and should be between 100-150 cm/yr
  • Well-drained soil pH 4.5-5.5
Production Profile
World
  • The world pineapple prodcution was 18,260.95 MT from a production area of 903,083 hectares. (Source: FAOSTAT 2006)
  • Leading pineapple producers include: Brazil, Thailand, Philippines, India, Costa Rica and China 
 Philippines
  •  By 2009, local prodcution is expected to reach 2,319,402 MT.
  • in 2007, Philippines has an existing prodcution area of 53,973 hectares that produced a volume of 2,016,412 MT.
  • Local prodcution reached 1,833,906 MT in 2006 and 1,925,598 MT in 2007 with a growth rate of 5%.
  • The total area planted to pineapple in the country was 49,688 hectares in 2006 and 49,812 hectares in 2007 (source: BAS)
  • Northern Mindanao attained the highest production area and volume in 2007 of 18,924 hectares and 924,505 MT respectively. Other top producing regions include: SOCCKSARGEN (803,761 MT); Bicol Region (116,766 MT); CALABARZON (84,049 MT) and Cagayan Valley (28,630 MT).
  • The national target productin for 2008 is 2,167,666 MT.
  • For 2008, the target expansion area for pineapple is 5,115 hectares wherein Northern Mindanao (Region XI) targeted the highest which is 3,055 hectares. (Source: HVCC Regional Coordinators)
Processing
  • Philippines is 2nd to Thailand in terms of processing, 85% of processing belongs to multinational companies like Del Monte and DOLE
  • Pineapple is processed into puree, dried, juice concentrates, canned products and fruit cocktail in syrup that is intended for export
  • At present, there are 28 processing plants in the Philippines
  • Native Philippine Red or Spanish Red is processed is an excellent source of piña fiber

Region V for queen pineapple

  • Average cost per hectare is Php 48,486; net income is Php 41,514 per hectare (Pinyang Quuen Module of DA-RFU V)
Region X
  • Average cost per hectare is Php 213,556; net income is Php 299,444 per hectare (Estimated cost and return analysis of pineapple per hectare as of August 31,2007)
